Update 5/1/17: Sad to say, Block & Grinder closed down. 🙁
If you’re looking for a low key place with high quality food, this is the place to go! I first visited Block & Grinder a year ago and immediately fell in love with it. They are primarily a steak and chops restaurant with a few tasty odds and end. They’re located in South Charlotte and a strip mall so they don’t have too much room to work with. We are there on a Friday night and it was packed. They have a small bar and an actual butcher shop in the restaurant so it makes it that much smaller. The vibe is pretty chill and feels like a great place to meet co-workers for a drink and dinner.
The servers are all extremely nice, observent, and genuinely care about your eating experience. He walked us through the in’s and out’s of the menu and pointed out a few of his favorites. I usually ask every waiter what they recommend. Their answer will tell me if they really care about me or only about my tip. Some waiters will point you to the most important thing on the menu because they know the higher your bill, the more tip they earn. I don’t like that and I’m sure a lot of you will agree with me. He recommended the Bone-in Ribeye ($37) and Mac-n-Cheese ($7) so I didn’t fight him. I’m not a huge steak eater but when in Rome, be Roman…
The food came out perfection!! I like my steaks cooked medium plus which can be hard to hit but they nailed it. The extra flavor from the bone really adds to the deliciousness of it. There is no way I was going to eat all 22 ounces of it but I sure tried!
Now let’s get to the Mac-n-cheese… Just one word is needed here: WOW! I’ve had plenty of Mac-n-cheese in my day but this is hands down my favorite! It is creamy but not overpowering. It’s a big enough portion to satisfy you without making you feel bloated. It’s topped with crispy bread crumbs that give the noodles a refreshing texture. This side dish is simply amazing.
For those of you who might live on the north side of Charlotte, you’re in luck! They just opened a second location in Mooresville at the new Langtree center on exit 31. We went on opening night and I can already tell this place is going to be a success too.
Overall I give Block & Grinder 4 out of 5 stars. The only reason why I don’t give it 5 out of 5 is because I have to save that last star for a place that absolutely knocks my socks off. I highly recommend this place for your next night out.
