I lived in 4th Ward neighborhood for 6 years and it is still my favorite part of Charlotte. Mostly made up of beautiful Victorian homes and a relaxing park, I always love when a restaurant opens up in this area!
We were greeted by the friendliest employees when we walked up and were offered our choice of seating inside or outside. The inside offered modern seating with beautiful colors and chandeliers, but with the incredible California-esq weather of sun and 70 degrees, we had to sit outside.
The restaurant offers tapas style food which is my favorite as it allows me to sample several different items and also helps with how indecisive I am.
Our waiter recommended we start with the Higos y Prosciutto ($8) – Figs wrapped in prosciutto. The dish was served with four pretty big figs and drizzled in balsamic vinegar. The figs were pretty big and delicious with the combination of the prosciutto and balsamic.
We also ordered the Poplar Mac and Cheese (12) and added shrimp ($3). There were only a few shrimp but they were huge and cooked perfectly! The mac was super cheesy and came with 4 slices of baguette bread to dip into the cheese – yum!
Lastly we ordered the Bocata de Chorizo y Queso ($8) – sausage topped with parmesan cheese served on bread. I’m not the biggest chorizo fan but this was my favorite of the three dishes we tried!
The restaurant offers a nice selection of beer, wine and cocktails. The food was great, the staff was wonderful and the drinks superb. Poplar Street Café leaves you feeling like you just dined at a boutique restaurant in Spain – you would never know you were in the heart of Uptown Charlotte!
