Ahhhhhhhhhh. The sun in my face. The sand between my toes. And cool refreshing water to swim in.
I’m not talking about the beach my friends. I’m talking about a hidden gem found in Mooresville called “The Rock Quarry at Carrigan Farms.” You can experience the sun, the sand and swimming without having to drive 4 hours to the beach.
Carrigan Farms has been around for over 100 years and in the 1960’s the quarry was mined for its granite to be used in the construction of i77. But once a natural spring was discovered, the quarry filled up with a gorgeous blue sapphire water and is now a favorite swimming hole with the people that know about it.
I’m now one of those people thanks to my husband.
Jason grew up in Mooresville and visited the quarry quite often during high school so this first time we went, he was excited to show me where to dive in and how high he’s jumped off the rocks before (which they don’t let you anymore).
When you turn into the farm, you’ll drive down a loonnng dirt road that winds its way back to the quarry and past the most beautiful weeping willow tree you’ll ever see. Upon parking, you’ll most likely be greeted by the Labrador retriever that belongs to the farm owner, Doug Carrigan. He’s such a sweet and loving dog who LOVES to chase a tennis ball for hours!
When you come down the boardwalk and round the corner, you’ll get your first glimpse at this oasis (and no, it’s not a mirage!). For just $12 we gained access to the rock quarry for the afternoon. If you’ve never been before, they do require each person to take a swim test (even if you were a college swimmer). Needless to say, I passed.
The quarry has a nice, flat, grassy area perfect to lay out your towels and relax. Or for kids to throw the ball or Frisbee. There’s a HUGE covered patio area with tables and chairs for those looking for shade or wanting to eat.
And then there’s an entire area of sand, complete with a volleyball net to enjoy the game or two. Or you can simply sit and play in the sand!
Now the only way to get in the water is to leap off the rock wall (it is a rock quarry after all). The smallest height is about 10 feet off the water and isn’t too bad until you’re standing right on the edge. I’m not gonna lie, a little nerves started to kick in. What appeared to be an easy to conquer swimming area suddenly gave me butterflies in my stomach!
The rocks are definitely high enough to get a rush as you jump in. Ladies – you may want to rethink that strapless swimsuit top to avoid tan lines and go with a suit with straps to avoid any potential embarrassing moments! Good thing one piece suits are coming back in style!
Once I saw a few little kids jumping in no problem, I decided it was more than fine (especially with lifeguards stationed on the rocks and on a floating dock in the water)
JUMP!!! SPLASH!! REPEAT!!
Even with everything the quarry has to offer, we found ourselves climbing out and jumping right back in again and again and again!
This is such a unique and fun experience! I highly recommend you check it out this summer!
But wait… there’s more!
